Welcome to my Aaliyah page, one of the unnumerable tributes that can be found on the Web. Mine probably won't add anything new to what you may have already seen, but I just felt I had to do this, because Aaliyah was a very special person and a remarkable artist who, when she passed away, was on the brink of becoming the superstar she deserved to be, which makes her untimely death all the more saddening.
It's hard to believe that it's already been four years since our beloved Aaliyah climbed aboard a plane that would crash down just minutes after it took off, killing not only her but seven other people. Losing Aaliyah, the music business lost one of its most promising artists who, with the precious help of her collaborators (her mentor and alleged former flame R. Kelly, Timbaland and Missy Elliot, among others), incorporated a fresh flavor into R&B. To this day, I still think that her eponymous effort, 2001's Aaliyah (which was released just a mere month before she died), is one of the best R&B albums ever. On it, Aaliyah and her crew carved an edgy yet polished sound, and Timbaland's killer beats are the perfect complement to Aaliyah's smooth, sultry voice. Speaking of her voice, I believe that it's the main reason that made me an Aaliyah fan : in a world of Mariah Carey wannabes who make my ears bleed with their vocal gymnastics, Aaliyah was a breath of fresh air. She never oversang her songs and proved that subtlety is the best way to make an emotion come through. Sure, she may not have had Whitney Houston's pipes, but I believe that Aaliyah's voice was way more powerful in terms of its ability to convey emotions and messages. She really sounded like she knew what she was singing about, unlike other R&B and pop divas who think that, just because they can scream and hit sky high notes, they are true artists (you listening, Christina Aguilera ??). I always believed that singing isn't just about how good your voice is on a technical point of view. Being able to sing is one thing; being able to establish a special connection with your audience is another. Aaliyah could do both. And that's what made her so special.
And as we all know, Aaliyah was quickly becoming a triple-threat : not only could she sing and dance, but she was also beginning to tap into the beautiful world of acting, quite successfully, I must say. Her performance in Romeo Must Die, in which she starred alongside Jet Li, got rave reviews, and she was chosen to play in the two Matrix sequels. As fate would have it, her untimely demise forced the producers to cast another actress and to reshoot some scenes. Nevertheless, Aaliyah showed real talent for acting and there's no doubt that, had she lived, she would have had a stellar career in both movies and music.
R.I.P, Baby Girl. You are sorely missed.
